Alive Shinjuku
"Parallax City"
[Exhibition] [Talk]

In 1975, MoMA held a strange exhibition titled "Shinjuku: The Phoenomeral City." This exhibition, which has remained largely unreviewed until now, satirically expressed the cultural and geopolitical gap between the West and Japan at the time, presenting a diminished version of "Tokyo" through a limited perspective. The critic Koji Taki was invited to direct the exhibition alongside Henry Smith and Peter Gluck. Taki, a gifted urban enthusiast, portrayed Shinjuku as literally kitschy and perverse, but it seems as though a new method for expressing "Shinjuku" as a symbol has yet to be invented. This exhibition aims to consider the current state of Shinjuku, and ultimately the city's history, through this distorted, idealized, and distorted image of Shinjuku. Koji Taki left behind over 2,000 photographs of Shinjuku for the "Shinjuku Exhibition." These photographs, a series of snapshots of private experiences, fold in Taki's gaze from 1975. From there, I would like to analyze and develop Shinjuku as Taki Koji's model, depicting a possible image of the city. This would be to generate a Taki Shinjuku without Taki in 2025, and to immerse myself in our own Shinjuku, a place we do not know.
